Umlauftank II / Print
Berlin, Germany, 2017
by Simon Kennedy
This image shows the Umlauftank II (or circulation tank) and is part of an ongoing project that examines the mid-century architectural legacy of Berlin, and its relationship to the city surrounding it. While celebrating the stunning, heroic, futuristic work of iconic architects such as Ludwig Leo, Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer, the project also incorporates the remains of Spree Park, an abandoned theme park, and more sinister elements: Mäusebunker (mouse bunker), where thousands of animals were tested in the name of science and cosmetics, and the Schwerbelastungskörper (heavy load bearing body) – the last existing piece of architecture in Berlin constructed by Nazi chief architect Albert Speer.
